Washover fan

During the week of May 6 we mapped Onslow Beach, NC with a terrestrial laser scanner.  We do this twice a year (spring and fall).  After Hurricane Irene in 2011, the island overwashed and a large washover fan formed.  We have been monitoring the morphology of that fan ever since. Beth has a couple of camera traps deployed on the fan.  The time-lapse movie, below, shows that the washover fan still floods during spring tides.  The intracoastal waterway is in the background.

As the fan begins to flood, the groundwater rises and when it is walked on it liquifies and turnes into a type of quicksand.  Check out the video below of Ethan walking on the washover fan as the tide is rising.
